The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is one of Melbourne’s most ambitious infrastructure projects: a 90-kilometre rail ring connecting major metropolitan hubs, universities, and employment centres. Designed to reshape the city into a true “city of centres,” SRL will redefine how people move and live across Melbourne’s middle suburbs.
Over an intensive 18-month program, Urbis' creative team partnered with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority to deliver a suite of strategic and design documents that brought this vision to life.
Our key deliverables:
Across two years, we designed and produced:
-
6 Draft precinct visions (click here to access)
-
6 Draft structure plans (click here to access)
-
6 Final visions (click here to access)
-
6 Implementation plans (click here to access)
In total, we delivered 24 documents spanning
1,296 published pages, each one client-branded and crafted with precision, consistency, and a keen attention to detail to ensure full brand alignment.

Key features of our strategy:
Stakeholder strategy
A shared vision with high-pressure delivery at scale, anchored around milestone reviews through multiple layers of government, from the project team to the VIC Department of Premier and Cabinet.
Collaborative approach
Our creative team worked seamlessly with urban planners, economists, urban designers, transport planners, and spatial analysts, ensuring every document reflected both technical accuracy and creative clarity.
Efficiency and excellence
Every milestone was delivered on time, with the quality of delivery praised across government and stakeholder groups, setting a benchmark for future infrastructure communications.
Our impact and enduring legacy:
Our creative team transformed technical content into engaging, visually compelling publications.
We added creative value with a bespoke set of precinct illustrations and urban design diagrams. The illustrations become the signature visual asset for all community engagement communications, and appeared on websites, posters, flyers and hoarding within the precincts.
For our creative team, the challenge was as ambitious as the project itself: to translate this bold vision into a suite of documents that could inspire, inform, and guide decision-makers at every level of government.
